NAUGATUCK — Mr. Louis A. Moniz, 91, of Naugatuck, passed away early Monday morning April 29, 2013 at the Vitas Hospice unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury. He was the husband of the late Beverly (Steeves) Moniz, who passed away in 1987 after 39 years of marriage.

Mr. Moniz was born in Bristol, R.I., March 17, 1922, a son of the late Joseph and Maria (Alves) Moniz and was educated in the Rhode Island school system. He had been a Naugatuck resident since 1941, moving here from Rhode Island. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army, Co. C. 407th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, The American Theater Campaign Ribbon, The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, The Victory Medal, and in 2009 was presented the Connecticut State Veteran’s Service Medal. He was awarded the Beacon Valley Grange # 3, Citizen of the Year Award in 2004

He was a communicant of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish and had been an active member of Post 17, American Legion, The Shepherd Salem Lodge # 78 A.F & A.M., The Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Waterbury, the Lafayette Consistory 32nd Degree, Valley of Bridgeport, The Pyramid Shriners # 9 of Milford, the Naugatuck Shrine Club, The Retired Men’s Club at the Senior Center and the former Naugatuck Chapter # 495 A.A.R.P.

He leaves two daughters, Elaine Hoffman and her husband James of Seymour, and Fern Grillo and her husband Charles of Derby; two grandchildren, Brian Overton and his wife Nancy, and Chrissy Reynolds and her husband Bruce; two great-grandchildren, Joseph Reynolds and Karli Reynolds; his extended family, Chip and Sue Nicolari and their children, Heather and Phil Ucci and James and Ale Nicolari and their families; two step-grandchildren, Christina Troy and her husband James and Jason Hoffman and his wife Laura; three step-great-grandchildren, Ashley Kopchyak, Jimmy Troy, and Jace Hoffman, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph Moniz, John Moniz, Manual Moniz, Mary Recio and Gloria Vales.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Lou’s caregiver for the last 14 months, John Kalita.

His funeral will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. from the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St., and proceed to St. Vincent Ferrer Church, 1006 New Haven Road, for a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Burial with full military honors will be in Pines Bridge Cemetery, Beacon Falls. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. Members of the Naugatuck Veteran’s Council will meet at the funeral home at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
