NAUGATUCK — John D. Koonz, 86, of Naugatuck and Bomoseen, Vt., beloved husband of the late Margaret (Maroney) Koonz, departed this life on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.

John was born on May 19, 1925 in Naugatuck son of the late John and Bertha (Jackman) Koonz. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II aboard the Submarine Chaser PC-1083 as a Radioman 1st Class. After being discharged from the Navy he worked as a TV and radio repairman operating his own business Capitol Radio. In his retirement he and Margaret enjoyed their retirement in Vermont and trips to Camden, Maine where he and Margaret enjoyed sitting on the dock and watching the harbor activity. He continued working at Castleton State College as an electrician. In his spare time he enjoyed operating his HAM radio. He is remembered for offering local residents the opportunity to come to his home and speak with their relatives serving overseas in the war. His greatest legacy was being a loving husband and companion for over 65 years until she preceded him in death in 2011.

He will be sadly missed by his eight children, Christine Cleveland, Jay Koonz, Lynn Kirdzik, Jim Koonz, Rick Koonz, Kevin Koonz, Keith Koonz, and Marta Koonz. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A service celebrating John’s life will be held on Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m. at the B. C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm St., Wallingford. Military honors will follow the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
