NAUGATUCK — Mrs. Irene Selina (Gabriel) (Johnson) Demers, 98, of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday evening April 10, 2013, at the Beacon Brook Health Center. She was the widow of the late George M. Johnson and Robert L. Demers.

Mrs. Demers was born in Beacon, N.Y., Sept. 26, 1914, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Ketcham) Gabriel and been a Naugatuck resident for over 70 years, moving here from Waterbury. She was a graduate of Wilby High School and retired from the Lewis Engineering Co. with more than 25 years of service. She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church and had been active with the many of the committees at the church, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, and enjoyed the activities at the Naugatuck Senior Center. Her leisure time included walking, music, Bingo and knitting for the Special Care Nursery at the Waterbury Hospital.

The family would like to thank the staff at Beacon Brook for the wonderful care and concern that they showed to Irene while she was a patient there.

She leaves her daughter, Sandra D. Benson and her husband John of Kingston, R.I.; one sister, Marie Gabriel of Southbury; one grandson, Christopher Benson and his wife Christina and a great-granddaughter, Emma Marie Benson all of Kingston, R.I.

She was predeceased by her brothers, George Gabriel and Joseph Gabriel

Her funeral service will be held on Monday, April 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. Burial will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterbury. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
