NAUGATUCK — Eliot Knights Easterbrook Sr., of Lorann Drive in Naugatuck, passed away peacefully in his sleep, after a long fight with illness. He was the devoted husband of Helena (Daly) Easterbrook.

Eliot was born in Dudley, Mass., on Oct. 28, 1927. Raised on his family’s dairy farm with his three brothers, he eventually went on to earn a B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry at the University of New Hampshire and his PhD. at Ohio State University. He moved to Naugatuck and worked for Uniroyal Chemical as a senior research chemist. He retired in 1992 after 39 years of service, achieving the title of research group leader and accomplishing many important achievements including the development of Royalene. During the Naugatuck River flood of 1955, when his work space had to be moved, he met Helena and it was love at first sight. They married on Feb. 9, 1957.

He was an avid sports fan and, in his youth, enjoyed playing basketball and baseball, then watching his children and grandchildren play tennis, basketball, hockey, baseball and soccer. Growing up in Massachusetts, he became an avid fan of the Celtics and Patriots, but his lifelong favorite team was the Boston Red Sox. He never missed an opportunity to comment on their play especially if there was a Yankees’ fan present.

He loved gardening, golf, photography, sailing, and nature walks, but his greatest love was love of family. Besides his wife of 56 years, he leaves behind a daughter, Charlena Harrisson; a son, Eliot K. Easterbrook Jr.; three grandsons, Michael Easterbrook, Steven Easterbrook, Connor Harrisson, and a granddaughter, Treloara Harrisson. He is also survived by his younger brother, Arthur Easterbrook of Michigan.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck at the convenience of the family. Calling hour will be held on Saturday Oct.19, 2013 from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
