Eleanor was born on March 3, 1923 to the late Lillian (Ahrens) and Robert Carl Zehnder in Union City. Eleanor grew up in Union City. She was a proud graduate of Naugatuck High School and went on to achieve her RN license at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Waterbury, where she worked in the OR for over 10 years.
She met and married her beloved husband, the late Frank W. Salvatore. Together with Frank’s sister, Mary, and brother, Tony, and their spouses they built and ran Woodlyn Rest Private Hospital in Prospect. She and Frank built their dream home in Watertown in 1967, where she resided until 2011. Eleanor and Frank became part owners of and she continued to work as an RN (change nurse) at Glendale Health Care Center in Naugatuck in the mid ‘70s until she retired.
Eleanor was a very active communicant of St. John the Evangelist parish in Watertown as a member of the Council of Catholic Women and helping to coordinate the weekly Bingo. She was lovingly referred to as one of the “Bingonians” by Father Donahue. Eleanor loved her pets over the years, especially her cat, Muffin. She was an avid reader and loved to tell her amazing repertoire of jokes to anyone who would listen.
Eleanor was very proud of her two daughters. Sadly she lost her beloved daughter, Nancy Gee (Salvatore) Tarre in December 2011. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lila Ward Salvatore and her husband, Jerry Markowitz of Bush, La.
