Naugatuck – Mr. Edward P. O’Connor, age 89, of 53 Conrad St., died Saturday December 4,2010 at the Glendale Health Care Center in Naugatuck.

Mr. O’Connor was born in Naugatuck on March 25,1921 a son of the late Peter and Mary (Quinlan) O’Connor. He was a graduate of St. Francis School in Naugatuck and Naugatuck High School where he was a star basketball player on the 1939-1940 State and New England runner-up team. He was a former employee of Uniroyal Inc. in Naugatuck and also worked in the Maintenance Department at Naugatuck High School, retiring in 1986. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Naugatuck and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1946 in Naugatuck and the A.A.R.P.

Mr. O’Connor was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran having served in the 4th Marines, 23rd Regiment, 3rd Batallion I Company during World War II in the Battles of Iwo Jima, Saipan, and the Marshall Islands.

Mr. O’Connor is survived by a brother: John O’Connor of Naugatuck and a sister: Charlotte Gallucci of Phoenix, Az. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday December 10,2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church 338 North Main St. Naugatuck. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at the church. Burial with full military honors will be in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck. There are no calling hours. The Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home 82 Fairview Naugatuck is in charge of arrangements.
