WATERBURY — Edward J. “Mr. Ed” Karvelis, Sr., 82, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Waterbury Hospital peacefully surrounded by his family and friends. He was husband to the late Barbara (McDonald) Karvelis.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1931, son of the late Justin J. and Helen (Mendle) Karvelis. Ed was a lifelong resident of Waterbury and a graduate of Leavenworth High School in 1949. He had worked for Connecticut Light and Power and Yankee Gas for more than 40 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Karvelis was actively involved in many organizations including the Catholic War Veterans, Eagles Club, Polish Heritage Group, Knights of Lithuania, and Naugatuck Historical Society. He was past president of the Union City Polish American Club, past commander of VFW Post 7790 in Waterbury, and executive board member of the Lithuanian Club. Ed also served as a collector at Blessed Sacrament Church for over 50 years.

He leaves a son, Edward J. Karvelis, Jr. of Wethersfield; his sisters, Edna Piel of Allentown, Pa., Regina Rock, Dolores Wood and her husband Bill, Marlene Reeser and her husband Dave, all of Oakville; three grandchildren, Katelyn, Thomas and Bradley, all of Naugatuck; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his dear friend and companion Joan Taf and her family.

Ed was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Diane Karvelis.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Waterbury Hospital for the care given to Ed and the support given to his family and friends.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck, to St. Hedwig Church, 32 Golden Hill St., Naugatuck for a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, East Main Street, Waterbury. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. Members of the Catholic War Veterans and VFW Post 7790 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
