Obituary: Doris B. (Hellyar) Smolenski

NAUAGATUCK – Mrs. Doris B. (Hellyar) Smolenski, age 89, of 80 North Hoadley St., passed away peacefully on Sunday Feb. 6, at Waterbury Hospital after a brief illness surrounded by her sister and loving daughter. She was the widow of Edward J. Smolenski.

Mrs. Smolenski was born in Stone, England on Sept. 23, 1921 a daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Langston) Hellyar. Doris came to the U.S. as a young child, grew up and was educated in Ansonia. She met and fell in love Edward Joseph Smolenski at a Naugatuck/Ansonia basketball game and they later married. Ed and Doris made their home in Naugatuck where they raised their family.

She was retired from the Uniroyal Inc. Footwear Division and was employed after her retirement at the Naugatuck Glass Company for many years. She was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Naugatuck and a member of the Friendship Club, the Red Hatters, and the Naugatuck Senior Citizens where she enjoyed socializing with Harvey and her many friends. She enjoyed life, line dancing, gardening and peeling peaches for the peach shortcake at the St. Michael’s Village Green Fair and was an avid University of Connecticut women’s basketball fan.

Mrs. Smolenski is survived by her daughter: Bonnie Smolenski-Monahan and her fiance: Richard Zotti and her granddaughter: Farren Elizabeth Monahan of Naugatuck, with whom she resided. She is also survived by her sister: Eileen Kittredge of Sandwich, Mass., a daughter in law: Alice Smolenski of Naugatuck, a granddaughter: Sara Smolenski of Exeter, R.I., a great granddaughter: Lili, a niece: Debra Kosma of Naugatuck, two nephews: Tom Peters of Nashville, Tenn. and Dennis Bilcz of Denver, N.C. and her best friend and loving companion her dog GiGi. She was predeceased by a son: Edward Stanley Smolenski.

A memorial service will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Naugatuck in the Spring. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. The Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home 82 Fairview Ave. Naugatuck is in charge of arrangements.
