NAUGATUCK — Mrs. Anne M. (McGroary) Butler, 74, of Naugatuck, passed away early Thursday morning May 2, 2013. She was the wife of the late William Butler III who passed away in 1993 after 32 years of marriage.

Anne was born Sept. 14, 1938 in Waterbury, the daughter of the late John and Iva (Goodrich) McGroary, and was the stepdaughter of the late Margaret (Dullard) (Carroll) McGroary. She was educated in local schools, graduating from Naugatuck High School in 1956. She obtained her BSN in 1960 from Skidmore College and continued her education obtaining her masters in health education from Southern Connecticut State University.

Anne was employed by the Waterbury VNA from 1960 until 1966. She was most recognized for her 32 years with the Naugatuck VNA serving as staff nurse, supervisor as well as director. After 22 years as director of the Naugatuck VNA, she retired in 2009. Following her retirement, she was an active volunteer with the Howard Whittemore Library.

Anne was very active in the community serving as a member and past president of both the Catholic Council and the Naugatuck Rotary Club, the United Way of Naugatuck where she served as a member and chairperson for five years and as secretary of the board for 10 years. In 2000, she received the Mary Connolly Community Caring Award from the United Way, and was recently awarded the United Way Van Allen Medal “For Outstanding Community Service.” She served on the Board of Corporators for Naugatuck Savings Bank and as a board member for Simply Smiles. She was a life member of the Naugatuck Historical Society, the Friends of the Howard Whittemore Library and the Girl Scouts of Connecticut. She was active with the Girl Scouts for 14 years and had served as a Cadette Leader, and had served on the board of directors. She was active with the Naugatuck Garden Club and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute where she took history classes. She enjoyed quilting with the Southford Falls Quilt Group and the Material Girls in Naugatuck.

Anne is survived by her daughters Sara May Butler Sueta and her husband Paul of Scranton, Pa., Susan Marie Butler and her husband John Carter of Haymarket, Va., Nancy Jean Butler and her husband Frank Thomason of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Frances McGroary and her husband Robert of Menlo Park, Calif., and her grandchildren Michael, Mark and Matthew Sueta, and Katherine Zoe and Peter William Thomason and Theodore Lee Carter.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 10:15 a.m. from the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St., and proceed to St. Francis of Assisi Church for mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m.
