NAUGATUCK — Alice (Johnson) Talbot, 93, of Naugatuck, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 at Care One at King James, in Middletown, N.J.

Mrs. Talbot was born in Waterbury on Feb. 14, 1920 daughter of the late Kenneth E. and Julianna (Grelle) Johnson.

Alice was a lifetime resident of Naugatuck until relocating to her daughter’s home in Port Monmouth, N.J. in fall of 2012.

She taught elementary school, focusing on special education, when her children were in school. She loved to read and could often be found with her nose buried in a book. She and her late husband, John, loved to camp and trekked across the country and Canada in their camper, which included a trip the length of Route One, prior to his passing in 1990.
For several years Alice donated dozens of handmade quilts for use in veterans’ homes. She volunteered many hours with the Naugatuck chapter of the American Red Cross; when she was in her 70s she traveled to assist with disaster relief and relocation in other states. Due to her tireless efforts she was honored with the prestigious Clara Barton Honor Award, the highest honor bestowed on volunteers.

She was a member of St. Michael’s parish in Naugatuck. She took an active role in ECW in its existence, served on vestry in previous years, and was an avid supporter and volunteer at the annual Lenten bake sales.

Alice had been an active member of the Naugatuck Study Club, where she was recognized for having researched, written and presented papers on various subjects every year for 50 years, including one of her favorite topics: “The Life of Jack Benny.” She also served on the board during her membership.

She was a strong supporter of the Naugatuck Historical Society and frequently volunteered her time to work at the organization’s museum located in the old train station.
Her family was gifted with her beautiful handwork throughout their lives such as quilts, afghans and embroidered pillow cases made with much love.

She was predeceased by her husband, John H. Talbot and her son, Kenneth Talbot. She is survived by her brother, Edwin Johnson of Florida; her four children, Marjorie Talbot of Port Monmouth, N.J., John V. Talbot and wife Linda of Naugatuck, Susan Provost and husband Louis of Port Monmouth, N.J., and Charles Talbot and wife Janine of Saco, Maine, and six grandchildren, Mary Ann Capone and her husband Peter of Naugatuck, Jenna and Scott Provost and Pablino Talbot of Port Monmouth, N.J., Krystin Talbot of Philadelphia, Pa., and Laura Talbot of Saco, Maine.

Graveside funeral services and burial will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Grove Cemetery in Naugatuck. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at the cemetery. There are no calling hours. Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect is in charge of arrangements.
