PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Alice Cooper, 81, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away on Sept.11.

Alice was born to Gerald and Mary Catherine (Hicks) Mooney in Waterbury. She resided in Beacon Falls, and moved to Stuart, Fla. in 1990 where she remained until relocating in 2010 to Port St. Lucie, Fla.

At a time when there were very few female engineers, Alice finished her degree while working full time at Southern New England Telephone, becoming the only female engineer in her department. She retired in 1989 after more than 35 years of service. In Beacon Falls she volunteered with many civic organizations, including the Ladies Guild of St Michael’s Church, the PTA, and a founding member of the Republican Women’s Club. After moving to Stuart, Fla. she was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Palm City, Fla. Alice chaired several committees at Monterey Yacht and Country Club in Stuart, Fla. including Ladies Golf, Social Services and Rally for the Cure

Alice is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Harry Cooper; children Laurie Clemons and her husband Jay of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Ed Cooper of Naugatuck, and Trish Tessler of Newport News, Va.; grandchildren Gary Lucarelli and his wife Dani, Jessica Russell and her husband Jason, Brian Cooper, Alex Chosczyk, Jason Clemons, Amber Held, and Alex Held; great grandchildren Zachary Russell, Cody Russell, Isabelle Lucarelli, and Reno Lucarelli; and sisters Velma Kohl of Chicago, Ill., and Janice Cleveland and her husband Herb of Elk Grove Village, Ill., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son Jerry Cooper, great-granddaughter, Jamie Russell, and her sister, Sister Mary Catherine Mooney.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 pm, with a memorial service beginning at 7 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 16, at Aycock Funeral Home, 505 South Federal Highway, Stuart, FL 34994.
