PROSPECT — Manuel Pereira Alves, 73, of Prospect, died peacefully at his home, while surrounded by the love of his family, on Monday, Feb. 27, 2023. He was the devoted husband of Maria Helena Alves for more than 48 years.
Born Oct. 20, 1949 in Freixianda, Portugal, Manuel was a son of the late João Alves and Maria José Pereira de Bastos. Before his immigration to the United States, he served in the Portuguese military. Manuel was a hardworking and devoted employee of Somers Thin Strip for more than 34 years before his retirement. Working as a machinist, Manuel rarely missed a day of work.
Family was always Manuel’s priority and greatest joy. Maria and Manuel married in 1974 and spent 48 wonderful years together raising their son and daughter. Their family grew as their children married and welcomed children of their own.
Becoming “Avô” to his six cherished grandchildren was the brightest spot in Manuel’s life. “Avô” was a proud and devoted grandfather. Manuel was happiest when surrounded by family. Manuel also enjoyed gardening and making wine.
Left to honor his love and cherish his memory, besides his devoted wife Maria, are his daughter Sandra Alves Costa and her husband João, of Prospect, and their children Gabriella, Vanessa, Alexander and Juliana; and his son Sergio, his wife and their two children. Manuel is also survived by his brother Joaquim Alves of France.
Manuel was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Maria Emilia, Alzira, Alice, Gracinda and Antonio Alves of Portugal, and Palmira Alves of France.
A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated Friday, March 3, 2023 at noon at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St., Waterbury. All those planning to attend were asked to meet directly at the church. Interment was to immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, 2324 E. Main St., Waterbury. Friends and family were invited to visit with the Alves family on Thursday, March 2, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Prospect Memorial/The Palmerie Family Funeral Home, 122 Waterbury Road, Prospect.
