PROSPECT — John Joseph Murray, 78, formerly of Waterbury and Cheshire, died peacefully on Feb. 10, 2023.

John was born on Nov. 6, 1944 in Waterbury, a son of the late James and Elizabeth Murray. John graduated from Croft High School in Waterbury and served on the Waterbury Police Department for 12 years as a patrolman and a detective.

John also served as a state judicial marshal for New Haven County for more than 20 years, retiring in 2021.

John was a member of the Waterbury Elks, No. 265 BPOE; Monsignor Slocum Division No. 1, Ancient Order of Hibernians in Waterbury; and the National Rifle Association.

John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James Murray and Meaghan Clark; his daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Liam Lemke; his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Carolyn Murray; his granddaughter and her spouse, Morgan Alicea and Alberto Alicea; his grandson and his fiancee, Richard Godsil and Paige Nonamaker; his granddaughters, Kelsey Murray and Abrial Murray; his great-grandchildren, Natalie, Kylie and Andy Alicea; his niece and her spouse, Christine Kelsey and Mike Kelsey; his niece, Mary Dowling; his former spouse and friend, Jill Marcus; and his 20-year companion, Lauren Sciorintino.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Dowling and his brother, James Murray.

A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, 625 Baldwin St., Waterbury. Burial was to be private. Calling hours were to be Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.
