BETHANY – Herbert G. Howard, 87, of Bethany, died peacefully at his home, surrounded his devoted family, on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024. Herb now joins the love of his life, his wife, the late Joyce (Winter) Howard.

Born May 16, 1936 in New Haven, Herb was the only child of the late George and Olive (Munson) Howard. Growing up on the family property, Willowcrest Ranch, Herb amassed many wonderful memories. He grew up training horses and trick riding in rodeos, playing drums in his father’s band for square dances, and was a lifelong member of the grange.

He and Joyce raised their son Brian and daughter Cindy on the same property where he grew up.

Herb was very committed to the people of Bethany. He functioned in many public service roles over the course of his lifetime. After some coursework at Quinnipiac College, he volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol in lieu of military service. He later joined the Bethany Volunteer Fireman’s Association, serving in many capacities before ultimately becoming chief.

He was also fire marshal, town constable, and headed the Office of Emergency Management. He retired from the Bethany Department of Public Works as road foreman in 2000.

He then pursued his interest in ham radios and kept up friendships with weekly breakfasts at Country Corner Diner.

Herb’s heart was with his family. Despite the many hours he volunteered, his family was always first. When his kids were young, he enjoyed weekends swimming and boating at Candlewood Lake. Husband, father and grandfather were his most treasured roles in life.

Herb was an animal lover; even his pets and ‘grandpets’ had a big piece of his heart. He will be truly missed by all those who were blessed to know him.

Left to cherish Herb’s love and memory are his daughter Cindy (Phil Jalbert) Howard, and son Brian (Donna) Howard, all of Bethany; grandchildren Stephanie (Alex Andreone), Jennifer, and Andrew Howard and Jennifer Sortini; and four great-grandchildren.

Herb now joins his beloved Joyce in Heaven after missing her so much over the last three years.

Visitation was to be Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Prospect Memorial/The Palmerie Family Funeral Home, 122 Waterbury Road, Prospect. Funeral services were to be on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment was to immediately follow services at First Church Burial Grounds, Bethany, where Herb was to be laid to rest.
