SOUTHBURY — Gertrude Emma Griswold, age 96, a longtime resident of Oxford, entered into rest on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the Lutheran Home of Southbury. She was the devoted wife of the late Charles C. Griswold until his passing in 2013.
Gertrude was born in 1926 in Waterbury, daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth (McSweet) Townsend. She served as a World War II Nurse Cadet, was a registered nurse for more than 25 years at Waterbury Hospital, and retired from Bristol Babcock.
Gertrude was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Naugatuck, and enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader. She loved to travel and snow-bird in Florida.
Gertrude was the beloved mother of Patricia E. Griswold-Sorrentino of Ormond Beach, Fla., Elizabeth M. Flach and her husband Mark, of Oxford, and Robert C. Griswold of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrea LaFrance, Matthew Flach and Michael Flach; her cherished great-grandchild, Savannah Flach; her brother, Theodore Townsend; and her sister, Mildred Kovic.
She was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Townsend; and her sisters, Elizabeth Baslak and Ruth Solberg.
Friends were to greet Gertrude’s family at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St., Naugatuck, CT 06770 on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, from 10 a.m. until her funeral service began at noon. Burial was to follow in Grove Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck.
