NAUGATUCK — David Currier Cronin, age 87 of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2023, with his family by his side, at the Middlebury Convalescent Home. He was the beloved husband of Antoinette (Gugliotti) Cronin.
David was born Aug. 20, 1935, in Waterbury, a son of the late Timothy and Emma (Currier) Cronin, and moved to Naugatuck as a young child. He was a graduate of Naugatuck High School class of 1954.
David was an avid swimmer and co-captain of the Naugatuck High School swim team. David entered many races and won third place in the Bridgeport Harbor Race. During summer break he attended lifesaving and deep sea diving instruction at a school in Massachusetts, and taught handicapped children to swim.
During the flood of 1955, David worked with the Red Cross and Civil Defense to help find and recover missing and homeless people.
David was a strong supporter of unions and became a union steward while working at Uniroyal and vice president of the custodial union for the maintenance workers in the Naugatuck Department of Education, and a union steward with the Teamsters Local No. 677 and on the safety committee while working as a driver at Sealey Mattress.
David joined the Naugatuck Taxpayers in Revolt at the onset of the group and later served as president for seven years, trying to keep ahold of the town budget from increasing every year.
David was a member of the Naugatuck Ancient Order of Hibernians and served as Irish Mayor of the Day, as well as the Prospect Senior Center, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ojeda Council No. 33.
Besides his loving wife of 65 years, he leaves two sons, Dr. David Currier Cronin II and his wife Catherine of Roanoke, Va., Atty. Dennis Charles Cronin and his wife Theresa of Spokane, Wash.; a daughter Dana Marie Genarelli and her husband Dennis of Oakville; a sister Catherine Green of Naugatuck; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother Gerald Cronin and a brother-in-law Charles Green.
A Mass of Christian Burial was to be celebrated on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Burial was to be private and at the convenience of his family. There were no calling hours. Chase Parkway Memorial/Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, is assisting his family with arrangements.
