Julia Guarino

WATERBURY — Julia Guarino, 92, formerly of Oakville and Phoenix, Ariz., joined her husband in heaven on Aug. 19, 2019.

Julia was born in Waterbury on Aug. 28, 1926, daughter of the late Joseph and Vincenza “Lizzie” (Cermola) Ciarlelli. She was married to the love of her life, Carmen, for 66 years.

Julia is lovingly remembered by her son, Joseph Guarino and his wife, Susan, of Naugatuck; her son, Gary Guarino of Oakville; and her daughter, Liz-Beth Kennard and her husband, George, of Anthem, Ariz. She also leaves three grandchildren, Adam Guarino, Kristin Darnell and Jennifer Kennard; and her great-grandson, Keegan Darnell. She also leaves her sister and best friend, Frances Dinova of Middlebury; her sister-in-law, Florence Fitzpatrick and her husband, Bernard, of Wolcott, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. Two sisters, Eleanor Ciarlelli and Margaret Angelino, predeceased her.

The most important part of Julia’s life was the love of her children and their education. “Education comes first, then get married!” Not one to stay seated, Julia went to work after her children got older. She was an outstanding saleslady in many high fashion women’s clothing stores. One of her bosses quipped, “Julia could sell a rabbit its own fur!”

Julia had a great smile and a strong personality. She used her tireless energy in baking delicious cakes, pastries and cookies for all the family celebratory occasions.

The Guarino family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the administration and staff, especially the caretakers at Grove Manor Nursing Home in Waterbury for the dedicated love and care given to Julia where she spent the last years of her life.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Julia’s life will be Saturday, Aug. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Family and friends will meet on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.
