PROSPECT — Mr. Walter J. Makauskas, 84, of Prospect, passed away on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 after a brief illness at Paradigm Health Center of Prospect. He was the husband of Frances (Krzykowski) Makauskas.

Mr. Makauskas was born in Waterbury on June 2, 1929, a son of the late John and Helen Makauskas. He was a longtime Prospect resident and attended St. John’s University. He retired after many years of service from Plasma Coatings in Waterbury. His many interests included aviation, wood carving and oil painting, of which two of his works hang in the New York Port Authority as a tribute to 9/11. He was a member of Holy Saviour National Catholic Church.

Besides his wife of 59 years, he leaves his daughters, Debra Caruso and her husband Emil of Naugatuck, Karen Smith and her husband William of South Amboy, N.J.; his grandchildren, Gregory Caruso and his wife Vanessa of Wolcott, Stephen Caruso and his wife Stephanie of Prospect, Jessica Smith of Victorville, Calif., Kelsey Smith and her fiancée Jeremy Samples of Tampa, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Logan, Brandon, Charlie, and Georgia Caruso; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

His funeral will be held on Monday, Jan. 20 at 9:15 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck to Holy Saviour National Catholic Church for a service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Saviour Cemetery, New Haven Road, Naugatuck. Calling hours will be held on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m.
