NAUGATUCK — Mrs. Hedwig (Sterniak) Kalvaitis, 95, of Naugatuck, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at the VITAS Innovative Care Unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital. She was the widow of George C. Kalvaitis.

Mrs. Kalvaitis was born in Naugatuck on March 20, 1918, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Oldakowski) Sterniak. She was a lifelong Naugatuck resident and retired from the Naugatuck Glass Company where she worked for over 20 years. She was an active member in the Naugatuck Senior Center and Women’s Club. She enjoyed traveling with the seniors on many bus trips. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

She is survived by her son, Paul Kalvaitis and his wife Jeanne of Indianapolis, Ind.; brother, Ed Sterniak and his wife Sue of Southington; sister, Ann Verbyla of Naugatuck; sister-in-law, Florence Sterniak of Englewood, Fla.; grandchildren, Michael Kalvaitis and his wife Amy of Boston, Mass. and Alex Kalvaitis and his wife Ally of Dallas, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

The Kalvaitis family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Beacon Brook Health Center and the employees of the Vitas Hospice Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital for the outstanding care provided to Hedy plus, also recognize Barbara D’Angelo, Hedy’s long time care giver and best friend.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10:15 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., for a mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
