HARTFORD — State Rep. Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) was among eight freshman Republican legislators sworn into office Wednesday when the General Assembly began its session.

Zupkus said in a new release her top priorities are getting the state’s ailing budget back in the black and unemployed Connecticut residents back to work.

Zupkus, of Prospect, defeated Democrat Vickie Nardello, who held the seat since 1994, on Election Day for the right to represent the 89th House District. The district represents Prospect, Bethany, and a portion of Cheshire.

According to the release, Zupkus has met with officials in all three communities since Election Day to discuss issues important to the towns and is also planning constituent events in her district, including office hours and town hall meetings.

“People in the communities I represent placed tremendous faith in me on Election Day, and it’s an honor I take seriously,” Zupkus said in a statement. “Connecticut faces significant challenges, namely a massive budget deficit. Those hurdles, however, perhaps offer opportunity to restructure state government in a way that will create lasting financial stability.”

Zupkus serves on the legislature’s committees on Commerce, Public Safety and Human Services.
