PROSPECT — The race to represent the state House 89th District will feature two familiar candidates.

Incumbent state Rep. Lezlye Zupkus has received the Republican endorsement to run for re-election in the district, which includes Bethany, Prospect and a portion of Cheshire.

Zupkus, a Prospect resident, won her first term in office in 2012 after defeating long-time incumbent Democrat Vickie Nardello.

According to a press release, Zupkus is running on a platform calling for reduced taxes and a common-sense approach to reducing state spending. Zupkus cited a concern for her children’s future in Connecticut as a reason she is running for office again, according to the release.

Zupkus said she hopes to continue to make a difference and begin the change needed to get the state back on the right track.

Zupkus’ challenger will be the woman she defeated at the polls two years ago.

Nardello earned the Democratic nomination May 20 and a chance to win her seat back.

Nardello, a Prospect resident who served as state representative for 18 years prior to losing to Zupkus, said one of her focuses will be bringing in and keeping jobs in the district.

“Jobs cannot and should not be outsourced,” Nardello said in a press release. “We need to make it easier for businesses to grow their workforce so that our young people and young families can stay here in our great state.”

The elections will take place on Nov. 4.
