PROSPECT — Republican candidate for state representative Lezlye Zupkus has filed her application for a public grant from the Citizen’s Election Program.

Zupkus is challenging Democrat state Rep. Vickie Nardello for the state House seat in the 89th District, which covers Prospect, Bethany, and a portion of Cheshire.

To qualify for the program candidates have to raise $5,000 in small contributions and have at least 150 donors that reside in the towns within their district. Once approved, the Zupkus campaign will receive a grant of $26,850. Zupkus’ report submitted more than 215 donations totaling $5,335.00, according to a press release. The grant will give Zupkus a total of $31,850 to run her 2012 campaign, the release stated.

“I am thrilled with the overwhelming support I have received for my decision to run for this seat. As I listen and speak to the people in our communities, we all have the same belief that there has to be a change in Hartford. Everyone, young and old is concerned that there will be another tax bill from Hartford. People whether working or on a fixed income cannot afford it and are fed up,” Zupkus said in the release. “The 89th needs someone that represents them, and will work to stop tax increases, keep jobs and companies in our state and make Connecticut a working state. I will bring common sense and balance back to the Connecticut legislature.”
