A Naugatuck family survived a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver on Route 8 late Sunday night.

Police say 59-year-old Jonathan Whitlock was driving his SUV north on the southbound portion of Route 8 near Exit 35 when he slammed into an SUV harrying the Crowley family, which included an 11-year-old girl and two teenagers.

According to police, Whitlock suffered a laceration to his knee and complained of back pain after the 10:30 p.m. accident.

State police say Whitlock was driving a GMC Envoy the wrong way in the fast lane of Route 8 when he slammed head on into a Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Susan Crowley, 47, of 244 Evening Star Drive, Naugatuck.

Two teenagers, Daniel and Kevin Crowley, were in the back seat, along with 11-year-old Nicole Crowley. Kevin Crowley, 49, was also in the car, according to state police.

All of the Crowleys were wearing seat belts and were taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital for possible minor injuries, according to police.

A third car driven by Joseph D’Alessandro of Naugatuck also was damaged when the Crowley’s SUV spun into it after being hit by Whitlock’s vehicle, state police reported.

State police say the accident is under investigation, but as of Monday afternoon, no charged had been filed.
