BEACON FALLS — The town’s Public Works Department recently underwent a refurbishment.

Over a three-day period last month, renovations were made to the public works and highway department on Lopus Road. First Selectman Gerard Smith explained the renovations, which were performed by public works employees with Selectman David D’Amico leading the project, included moving the transfer station to the lower portion of the Lopus Road site along with leveling and grading an area at the upper portion of the site.

The changes, Smith said, will make room for a fueling station for town vehicles to be installed on the upper portion of the property. The town currently pays retail prices for gasoline and diesel, which is nearly $4 a gallon for gas and over $4 a gallon for diesel, he said.

Once the station is in, which is expected to be done with 60 days, the town will join a consortium to buy fuel, Smith said. As part of the consortium, he said, the town’s costs for gas and diesel are expected to be reduced to about $2 a gallon. Smith added the town will also purchase heating oil through the consortium.
