Work begins to replace curbs

BEACON FALLS — Nearly 2,500 feet of damaged curbs on at least 50 town roads will be replaced over the next few days after years of waiting.

Cocciola Paving of Oakville was awarded a $17,000 contract to complete the work, First Selectman Christopher Bielik said.

The company dispatched two teams Thursday to begin the repairs, said road foreman Robert Pruzinsky. Pruzinsky said one crew will work to prepare the subbase for paving while the other will replace the damaged curbs.

Pruzinsky said the work is estimated to take two or three days.

The work areas are scattered throughout town. Pruzinsky said a majority of the repairs will take place near intersections, but specific areas include Pinesbridge Commerce Park, Laurel Ledge Elementary School and town hall, as well as the Rimmon Hill Road section of the town.

Bielik said curbs around town significantly deteriorated in the aftermath of the October 2011 snowstorm. Since the storm was declared a federal disaster, the town was able to apply to receive money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Although the town applied for the funds in 2011, Bielik said the town received the check in January of this year.

“Residents have been very patient,” Bielik said.

FEMA covered 75 percent of the cost for the work. Bielik said the rest of the amount was included as a special project line-item in this year’s budget.

Bielik said no particular area is worse than the others. He said all areas slated for repairs are equally in need.
