NAUGATUCK — Author Thomas J. Craughwell will visit the Whitemore Library Sept. Wednesday to discuss his book, “Thomas Jefferson’s Crème Brulee: How a Founding Father and his Slave James Hemings introduced French Cuisine to America.”

The book chronicles how in 1784 Thomas Jefferson struck a deal with one of his slaves, 19-year-old James Hemings, to travel with him to Paris to master the art of French cooking. In exchange for James’s cooperation, Jefferson would grant his freedom. This narrative nonfiction book tells the story behind their trip and includes 12 of their original recipes.

The book talk and signing will begin at 6:30 p.m. and be held in the library’s Nellie Beatty Room. For more information, call the library at (203) 729-4591.
