NAUGATUCK — The Boy Scouts of America may have just celebrated their 100th anniversary, but the Girl Scouts of the USA aren’t going to miss their day in the sun.

The organization, which was formed as a counterpart to the BSA, turns 98 March 12. On Tuesday, the Board of Mayor and Burgesses voted unanimously to proclaim the week of March 7, 2010 Girl Scout Week, in light of the GSUSA’s inspiration of millions of young women “with the highest ideals of courage, confidence and character” and its impartment of leadership skills.

About 20 Girl Scouts packed into the Hall of Burgesses in Town Hall to receive the proclamation from Mayor Bob Mezzo, swelling the usually modest attendance at regular borough board meetings, comprising town officials and a few concerned citizens.

Once Deputy Mayor Tamath Rossi—who said the GSUSA “holds a special place in [her] heart” because of her own past and her daughter’s present participation—read the proclamation, the girls huddled into the “U” formed by the board’s tables for a photo, then turned and thanked the mayor and burgesses in singsong unison.

“I never had any girls, so I never had any scouts,” joked Burgess Robert Burns, “But they do a great job … congratulations to the girls.”

Burgess Mindy Fragoso, who admitted she was looking forward to the scouts’ cookie sale, was optimistic that at least some of them would grow up to become town leaders.

“I hope to one day be sitting where you’re sitting and see you up here leading our community,” she said. “Be good, and be brave.”
