NAUGATUCK — A 33-year-old Waterbury man shot and killed himself last Saturday night near the entrance to Naugatuck State Forest.

Police responded to 600 Hunters Mountain Road after a call at 9:19 p.m. reporting a car accident. A pickup truck had hit a tree, its air bag had deployed. A resident approached the truck to see if the man was OK.

The “operator appeared to be agitated, holding a shotgun and threatening suicide” according to Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Robert Harrison Jr. An officer who arrived on scene was trying to get the resident away from the truck when the man in the truck shot and killed himself, he said.
