NAUGATUCK — To raise awareness of soldiers who are missing in action or prisoners of war, borough veteran organizations will be holding a POW/MIA vigil on the Green.

The vigil, which is sponsored by the VFW Post 1946, American Legion Post 17 and the Catholic War Veterans Post 708, will be held Saturday, June 18 at the Gazebo on the Town Green.

Volunteers representing prisoners of war will spend an hour in a bamboo cage. At the end of each hour, a ceremony is performed releasing the volunteers from the cage and welcoming them home.

The vigil is held to heighten awareness of the POW/MIA issue and the government’s responsibility to continue searching for those missing in action to help bring closure to their families.

The vigil will begin at 8 a.m. with an opening ceremony and runs until a closing ceremony at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend at any time during the vigil.
