Fall in New England is associated with an array of colors as the green of summer subsides to autumn’s red, orange, and yellow. For the month of October, one color will stand above the rest in the Valley—pink.

The Naugatuck Valley will “go pink” this month as part of Griffin Hospital’s grassroots Campaign for Breast Wellness.

The campaign is to help raise support for the hospital’s new Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness in Derby.

Businesses throughout the Valley will be “pink-ifying” their establishments this month. Some businesses will be donating a portion of their sales during the campaign. Griffin Hospital and Blanchette Sporting Goods in Shelton will also be selling special pink items, such as pink breast cancer gel watches and pink wristbands.

“If you are affiliated with a club or business or a school, let them know about the initiative. It’s great fun, and the proceeds benefit a local cause, Griffin Hospital, which will touch the lives of neighbors, friends, and family,” said Sue Coyle, co-chair of the Campaign for Breast Wellness and chair of the Valley Goes Pink Event, in a news release.

The money raised during the campaign will be used to purchase equipment for the center, staff training and development to provide patient amenities, and to create a patient fund to assist patients who require financial aid.

The towns of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls have thrown their support behind the campaign.

Today, Beacon Falls First Selectman Susan Cable will declare October as The Valley Goes Pink month in Beacon Falls at 1 p.m. during the RiverFest and Duck Race downtown.

On Monday night, Naugatuck Mayor Robert Mezzo will declare October as The Valley Goes Pink month in the borough during a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on the Town Green. Luminaries in honor or memory of a loved one may be purchased at Town Hall for lighting at the ceremony. For more information, call the mayor’s office at (203) 720-7009.

Several other actives are also scheduled in Naugatuck to commemorate The Valley Goes Pink month.

On Tuesday, there will be a booth at a flu clinic at the senior center handing out breast awareness information and selling the special watches and wristbands.

On Wednesday, the Naugatuck Visiting Nurses Association will start its dress down pink days, which will be every Wednesday this month.

On Oct. 11, all Naugatuck Valley Savings Bank branch employees will be dressing in pink to help raise funds and awareness.

On Oct. 24, a dinner is planned at Jesse Camille’s that will feature several well-known luminaries as waiters who will contribute all tips to the campaign, including Mezzo, President of the Naugatuck Rotary Jennifer Merrill and John C. Roman, president and CEO, Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan.

A host of other activities are also planned throughout the Valley this month.
