PROSPECT — Five suspects ran after trying to steal a car from a good Samaritan who stopped to assist them after they crashed a stolen car on New Haven Road near the intersection of Radio Tower Road Thursday morning, police said.

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, police said three of the five suspects — who police described as four Black males and one Black female — were in custody. Prospect Police Lt. Nelson Abarzua said the female and two male suspects were caught.

The other two suspects remained at large and were believed to be in the New Haven and Hamden area, according to police.

No further information on the suspects was available as of Tuesday night.

The incident started at about 7:45 a.m. when the suspects caused a crash with a truck from a landscaping company as they were drive southbound on New Haven Road in a car stolen from New Haven, Abarzua said.

There were no injuries, he said.

A woman stopped to check if anyone was injured, police said, and the suspects then tried, and failed, to get into her car to get away. Police said the suspects ran down Radio Tower Road and into the woods and continued into Bethany. A police K-9 and a drone were used to track the suspects, Abarzua said.

Prospect Elementary School and Long River Middle School were placed in a modified lock down at about 8 a.m. There were additional security guards and police presence at the schools during the day, according to Abarzua.
