NAUGATUCK — Two people were hospitalized after a Tuesday afternoon accident at the intersection of Maple Street and Old Firehouse Road, where a traffic light is being installed because of accidents in the past.
An 18-year-old borough man driving a 2000 Mercury Mystique collided with a Waterbury woman driving a 2007 Hyundai Elantra just before 2 p.m., said Capt. Vincent Healy of the Naugatuck Fire Department. The woman was driving eastbound on Maple Street and the man, coming from the opposite direction, was trying to make a left turn onto Old Firehouse Road, Healy said.
The force of the collision spun the man’s car around 180 degrees, and the woman’s airbags deployed as she was jolted forward, causing her facial pain, Healy said. The man was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital and the woman to Waterbury Hospital, both with pain complaints.
The intersection has three-way stop signs and the road was slippery with rain at the time. Healy said police were investigating the cause of the accident.
