NAUGATUCK — A tractor trailer overturned Thursday morning on Route 63.

The accident occurred as the driver drove under the Route 8 overpass near Al’s Hot Dog Stand. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the accident and the driver was not injured according to police officers on the scene.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred at 10 a.m. and did not involve any other vehicle, Fire Chief Ken Hanks said. The truck, which was carrying scrap metal, rolled against the wall of the Whittemore Bridge and had to be pulled off the road and then dragged upright, Hanks said.
None of the truck’s contents spilled, but fire crews were on the scene for six hours cleaning up motor oil, hydraulic fluid and brake fluid that leaked, Hanks said.

As of the post, Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Robert Harrison couldn’t be reached for further comment.
