NAUGATUCK – Police and firefighters responded to a large amount of chemicals leaking from a dumpster behind Mount View Plaza on Rubber Avenue at about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Ten gallons of gasoline, antifreeze, paint thinner and motor oil had been illegally discarded, said Fire Capt. Richard Alfes. Also, they were stored in unapproved containers.

The dumpster is used by GNC, a health and nutrition retail chain that has a store in the plaza. An employee noticed the leaking material and called police.

The fire department had no way to contain the leaking chemicals and called the Department of Environmental Protection and an environmental cleanup company, Clean Harbor, to the scene. The mess had been cleaned up by Thursday night.

Anyone with information about who dumped the materials is asked to call Naugatuck police at (203) 729-5222.
