Towns to commemorate Veterans Day

Beacon Falls, Naugatuck and Prospect will mark Veterans Day with ceremonies

The Naugatuck Veterans Council is planning observances to commemorate Veterans Day on Saturday.

The day is highlighted by the Veterans Day parade at 2 p.m. The parade steps off from the Ion Bank parking lot at 87 Church St. and goes to the Green, where a ceremony will take place.

Staff Sgt. Bryan Curtis Jr., who has been a member of the Connecticut Army National Guard, 1048th Transportation Company for 12 years, will be the guest speaker for the ceremony.

Curtis was deployed twice to the Middle East. He was deployed to Iraq in 2006-2007 where he did convoy security. In 2012-2013, he was deployed to Afghanistan where he did line haul transportation with self-security.

Curtis has received several medals, including the Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, and Army Achievement Medal.

The schedule of observances in Naugatuck is as follows: Whittemore Bridge float lowering at 10:30 a.m.; WWI memorial wreath laying at 10:45 a.m.; ringing of the bells at 11 a.m.; parade at 2 p.m.

Prospect will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. on the town Green on Center Street. The ceremony will include members of the American Legion Post 194 and the VFW Post 8075 placing wreathes at the memorial

In Beacon Falls, American Legion Post 25 will hold memorial services at 11 a.m. at Matthies Park, 215 Pines Bridge Road.

The legion will also host a Veterans Day dinner starting at 6 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church at 25 Maple Ave. Tickets are $25 per person and all proceeds go towards the American Legion Post 25.
