NAUGATUCK — Three people were injured in a head-on car crash by a Gulf station at 2714 S. Main St. last Saturday night, at the Waterbury-Naugatuck line.

Fire and police officials from both towns responded to the accident, which occurred at about 8:30 p.m. The crash involved a GMC Yukon SUV and a smaller Chevrolet vehicle.

The driver of the Chevrolet appeared to have serious injuries, said Waterbury Deputy Fire Chief Dave Stankus. The man was pinned in the car when emergency responders arrived. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to extricate him.

The two occupants of the SUV sustained minor injuries. All three people were taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital.

Stankus said it appeared that the driver of the Chevrolet was wearing a seatbelt. He was conscious and breathing when he was transported to the hospital.

A portion of South Main Street was closed until late Saturday while police cleared the scene. Naugatuck police are in charge of the investigation.
