PROSPECT — A Waterbury teen was charged in the theft of a motor vehicle after the stolen car he was joyriding in crashed on Scott Road on Tuesday, police said.

State police said the car, a white Hyundai, which was reported stolen in Waterbury earlier in the day, crashed on Scott Road near the intersection with Maria Hotchkiss Road shortly before noon.

Prospect Resident State Trooper Matt Comeau said the driver hit a telephone pole, which had to be replaced.

Witnesses who called police to report the accident said they saw “several black males running from the car,” according to a news release from state police.

Comeau said Prospect, Waterbury and state police officers as well as two state police K-9 units searched for the occupants of the car following the accident.

A 17-year old male was arrested on Route 69 near Greenwood Road.

He was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle in the first degree, interfering with a police officer, criminal trespass in the third degree and breach of peace. He was released on a $1,000 bond and is due in court on July 30, according to state police.

According to Comeau, the teen said there were three others besides himself in the car. He told police he only knows their street names, not their legal names, Comeau said. The teen told police he was a passenger, not a driver, he said.

Comeau said police believe the theft was part of a larger series of vehicle thefts that have been plaguing the city of Waterbury recently.

The other occupants of the vehicle had not been located as of Wednesday.

The investigation remains ongoing, Comeau said.
