BEACON FALLS — The third annual Susie Classic kickball fundraiser is set for Aug. 8.

The event raises money for The Susie Foundation, a Beacon Falls-based nonprofit organization that supports local homebound patients and their families living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in Connecticut.

The Susie Classic will be at the Pent Road Recreation Complex, 100 Pent Road. Registration starts at 10 a.m., and the tournament begins at 12 p.m. The tournament is open to individuals 16 years old and older. Teams can register and pay the day of the tournament. Interested teams must submit a registration form online at TheSusieFoundation.org by July 31.

The Susie Foundation was founded in honor of Susan (Ready) Matthews, who lived in Beacon Falls with her family. Matthews was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in November 2009. She died at the age of 57 in 2011.

The outpouring of love and support the Matthews family received after Susan Matthews’ death motivated them to continue their work in support of homebound ALS patients and their families, explained Ryan Matthews, Susan Matthews’ son and executive director of The Susie Foundation, in a news release.

Matthews expects over 200 people to come for this year’s Susie Classic and is hoping to raise over $7,500. The first two tournaments grossed over $10,000, he said.
