The borough’s newest police officer passed his first test, actually it was more of an eye exam.

At about 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 20, Off. Ian Kosky and Vane, the Naugatuck Police Department’s new K-9 officer, were dispatched to a home on Hoadley Street to help a 75-year-old man who had slipped on ice in his driveway, police said.

The man, who refused medical treatment, lost his glasses in the snow during his fall, police said. After helping the man up, Kosky and the man tried to find the glasses in the snow, but were unable to find them.

That’s when Kosky put Vane, who is trained in evidence recovery, into action.

“Within two minutes the dog found the glasses in the snow,” Lt. Robert Harrison said.

Vane joined the department earlier this month, and police said this incident was the first time he was used.
