NAUGATUCK — Fire marshals are investigating two small fires reported in the same neighborhood within 45 minutes of each other Saturday.

A police officer on patrol at about 2:30 a.m. noticed a fire on the porch of a three-family house at 282 North Main St., Fire Chief Ken Hanks said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames. The first floor of the house was vacant, and although there were people asleep on the second and third floors, no one was injured or displaced, Hanks said.

The house sustained exterior damage only, Hanks said.

While the crew was waiting for the fire marshal, they received word that a shed on neighboring Curtiss Street was fully ablaze, Hanks said. That fire was quickly extinguished, as well, Hanks said.

Fire marshals, with the help of police, continue to investigate the cause of the fires, Hanks said.
