BFTownHall2BEACON FALLS — Senior citizens will no longer have to sweat the problems with the air conditioning unit at the Beacon Falls Senior Center.

The center began experiencing a problem with its cooling system the second to last week in June, First Selectman Gerard Smith explained. Since the temperatures have been so hot recently the center has been closed until the issue can be fixed.

Last week, the Board of Selectmen approved a bid from Murphy Brothers Heating and Air Conditioning in Milford for $9,800 to replace the system. The company submitted the lower of two bids for the job, the other bid was $12,315.

Smith said Ben Murphy from Murphy Brothers looked over the system to see if it could be repaired rather than replaced at his request.

Smith said Murphy told him the system is as old as the building, half the parts are unavailable and by the time if was fixed something else would break.

The board sent a recommendation to the Board of Finance to pay for the work with funds transferred out of the equipment replacement line item from waste water treatment budget. The finance board’s next meeting is scheduled for July 9.

On Tuesday, Smith said Murphy Brothers has ordered the equipment needed and he hopes the center can be reopened by July 8.
