BEACON FALLS — The Board of Selectmen last week approved a resolution to do road work along Beacon Valley Road and to request the use of a Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant to pay for it.

First Selectman Christopher Bielik said the road is washing out in spots and water is pooling along it when it rains.

Officials hope to use a $500,000 STEAP grant for the work.

The town received the grant from the Office of Policy and Management in 2016 for work along West Road, Bielik said. At the time, officials thought that the proposed Beacon Falls Fuel Cell Park would soon come to fruition and necessitate tearing up West Road to bring in gas lines, he said. The town wanted to ensure that the road was completely repaved and not just patched once the gas lines were in place, he said.

However, there are no plans to move forward with the fuel cell park right now, and the town feels repairs on Beacon Valley Road would be a better use of the money, Bielik said.

As part of the resolution, the board requested that OPM reallocate the grant. Bielik said the request was just a formality. He expected OPM would move forward with it soon.

The work, which would run from Beacon Valley Bridge to the Naugatuck town line, is expected to include replacing all catch basin tops, replacing catch basins as needed, installing new driveway aprons, reclaiming and repaving the road, and any other related repairs deemed necessary.
