NAUGATUCK — The Board of Education unanimously voted Sept. 12 to hire an additional third grade teacher to alleviate large class sizes at Maple Hill Elementary School.

There are four third grade classes at the school with an average of 26 students. With the addition of a fifth third grade teacher, the average class size will shrink to 21 students for third grade.

Maple Hill is the largest elementary school in the district with close to 500 students. This year, enrollment at the school increased by 34 students.

The district has posted the teacher position. Officials are looking to hire a teacher as soon as possible. The salary for the new teacher will be based on multiple factors, including experience and level of education. The lowest starting salary for a teacher this fiscal year is $47,399, according to the teachers’ contract.

Superintendent of Schools Sharon Locke said officials plan to identify grant funds to pay for the new teacher.
