Dawn (Lafferty) Hochsprung

The family of the late Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn (Lafferty) Hochsprung has created a scholarship fund to honor her memory.

Hochsprung, a Naugatuck native and graduate of Naugatuck High School, was among the victims killed during the Dec. 14 shooting at Sand Hook School. According to reports, Hochsprung rushed to the sound of gunfire and broken glass to help her students. She was married with two daughters and three stepdaughters.

To memorialize Hochsprung, her family has established the Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung Memorial Fund at the Waterbury Teachers Federal Credit Union. The fund will be used to provide a scholarship to a Naugatuck High student pursuing a career in education.

A New Year’s Eve fundraiser will be held to benefit the fund.

The event will be held at Dee Man’s Bar & Grill, 1370 New Haven Road and begins at 7 p.m. The event will feature a buffet-style dinner, music, and a champagne toast. Tickets are $50 per person.

To contribute to the fund, donations can be dropped off at or mailed to WCTFCU, 772 Straits Turnpike, Middlebury, CT 06762 or WCTFCU, 24 Rowan St., Extension, Danbury, CT 06811.
