Republicans have thrown their support behind George Logan to challenge Democrat state Sen. Joseph Crisco in the 17th District.

“Over the past 20 years residents of the 17th Senatorial District witnessed the state we all love go from first to worst in almost every single category measuring the health of a state. We have seen our state debt skyrocket, record tax increases year after year, and small and large businesses pack their bags for business-friendly states,” Logan stated in a press release. “We need to put an end to Hartford’s out-of-control spending habits and the major taxation that comes with it.”

Logan, a 47-year-old Ansonia resident, received the Republican nomination to run for the Senate seat on May 11. The 17th District represents all or portions of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge.

“I can no longer sit back and watch the majority party’s leadership in Hartford continue in budget crisis mode and spend money we don’t have without experiencing the consequences of their actions,” Logan stated in the release. “We need to make long-term structural changes to the budgeting process, and unless this happens we will see budget deficits continue to grow.”

Crisco, a Woodbridge resident, has represented the district since 1992.

Logan, who is married with two children, is the director of environmental management and government relations at Aquarion Water Company. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Griffin Hospital, the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA and Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut, according to the release.

Naugatuck Republican Town Committee Chairman Kim Kiernan said Logan is a fantastic candidate who is running to finally end Crisco’s career of tax-and-spend policies.

“We as citizens of this once fine state need to take action now and send a message to Hartford that we do not have bottomless pockets and they can no longer continue lining the pockets of union leaders and legislators who refuse to put in the work to make long-term structural changes to the budgeting process,” Kiernan said. “George’s plan is to do just that and I am counting on our citizens to support him in helping get our state headed in the right direction.”
