REGION 16 — The Region 16 Prevention Task Force is sponsoring an online safety program for students and parents.

The program for parents will be held Thursday at Woodland Regional High School starting at 5:45 p.m.

Senior Assistant State Attorney Richard Colangelo, Jr. will be the evening’s special guest speaker. Colangelo will discuss tools and strategies for addressing children’s use of social networking sites, cyber-bullying, online predators, “sexting” and 24/7 cell phones.

Colangelo will also present a modified and age-appropriate presentation to students at Long River Middle School and Woodland Oct. 12.

Attendees of the evening program will also learn about the consequences of online public socializing and the permanence of digital data. Parents will learn how to monitor their child’s online activity, stay on top of the latest internet issues, and teach their children how to be savvy and safe on the internet.

Shelly McNulty, Region 16 school social worker and Karen Dorion, Region 16 elementary school counselor will also discuss the new laws that impact the district, such as the Safe School Climate law, and how parents can support their children at home, and who to contact at school if they are concerned for their child.

Refreshments and child care will be provided beginning at 5 p.m. For further information, call Elaine at (203) 982-6478.
