PROSPECT — Region 16 Superintendent of Schools James Agostine has accepted the superintendent job in the Monroe school district.
“Personally and professionally it’s a new challenge for me,” Agostine said. “I’ve come to love Region 16. But, this position offers some new challenges that I’d like to take on.”
Agostine was named a finalist for the top spot in the Monroe school district in late October. On Monday night, the Monroe Board of Education approved hiring Agostine.
Agostine has been superintendent in Region 16, which covers Beacon Falls and Prospect, for the past four years.
The Region 16 school board is scheduled to accept Agostine’s letter of resignation at a special meeting Wednesday night, according to the meeting’s agenda.
Agostine has not yet officially told the board he’s leaving. The official announcement is expected tomorrow night.
“We wish him the best in his career and we want him to do what’s best personally and professionally for him,” said Region 16 school board Chair Donna Cullen, who hadn’t spoken with Agostine yet as of this post.
Under Agostine’s contract with Region 16, the board could hold him for up to 90 days before he would be able to leave. The board is expected to discuss its options, including who to name as interim superintendent, tomorrow night, possibly in executive session.
