Region 16 board to discuss next step on budget

Reg-16-OfficeREGION 16 — The Region 16 Board of Education will conduct a special meeting Tuesday to discuss, with possible action, the proposed 2013-14 budget.

The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. at Long River Middle School in Prospect. The meeting will include a public comment session. The district serves Beacon Falls and Prospect schools.

Board members will establish a date, time and location for a district meeting on the budget and the method of voting.
Voters in Beacon Falls and Prospect rejected a proposed $38.8 million school budget for next year at a referendum May 7.

The budget proposal was shot down by 185 votes overall, or 828 opposed and 643 in favor, according to the official tally from both towns.

Voters in Beacon Falls rejected the plan by 240 votes, or 454 against and 214 in favor, the tally shows. In Prospect, voters approved the plan by 55 votes, or 429 in favor and 374 opposed.
