ANSONIA — As of late Tuesday night, the race for the 17th Senatorial District was too close to call.
As of 10 p.m. incumbent Republican state Sen. George Logan held a slim, 131-vote lead over his Democratic challenger, Jorge Cabrera. According to unofficial figures, Logan received 18,507 votes to Cabrera’s 18,376. The figures don’t include Election Day registration votes from Hamden and Naugatuck and some absentee ballots, which were still being tallied as of 10 p.m.
The 17th District covers all or parts of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge.
Logan, a 49-year-old Ansonia resident, was seeking his second term in the state Senate. He was first elected in 2016 after defeating long-time Democrat incumbent Joseph Crisco.
Logan, the director of environmental management for Aquarian Water Company, ran on promises to stop tax increases, keep an eye on wasteful spending and prevent tolls.
Logan said he felt good about the campaign he ran.
“We had a great team, we ran a positive campaign. We executed the plan well. I’m going to have to see how the votes actually shake out,” said Logan at his campaign headquarters in Ansonia.
Cabrera, a 44-year-old Hamden resident who works for the United Food and Commercial Worker’s Union Local 919, ran on promises to properly fund schools and help small businesses.
A message left with Cabrera’s campaign wasn’t returned.
