PROSPECT — Erica Lafferty Smegielski, of Prospect, will be a guest speaker at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 27.

Smegielski, a Naugatuck native, is the daughter of late Sandy Hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, who was murdered when a lone gunman shot and killed 20 students and six educators at the school on Dec. 14, 2012.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s team in a news release said that since the Sandy Hook massacre, “Erica has become an outspoken advocate for common-sense gun violence prevention measures. Erica was featured in the (Clinton campaign) ad, My Mom.”

Smegielski, who also spoke on stage with Clinton in Hartford in April, works for Everytown for Gun Safety, which states that it works to end gun violence and build safer communities.
